Concept
MAM – Media Art Museum is a permanent space dedicated to Media Art in the heart of Rome.
MAM occupies approximately 1,000 square metres and brings together exhibitions, installations, performances, research, training and educational activities.
At its heart is a 300-square-metre immersive room, made unique by an integrated stage, alongside exhibition spaces, a permanent collection and spaces dedicated to education and professional training. Beyond its seasonal daytime exhibition, MAM comes alive with festivals and selected events dedicated to digital, audiovisual and immersive live arts.
MAM grows out of more than twenty-five years of activity in digital and audiovisual arts, bringing into a permanent space the international network of artists, organisations and projects that has grown since 1999 around the work of its founder, Gianluca Del Gobbo, and his collaborators.
Mission
MAM provides a permanent home for Media Art and for artistic practices that use contemporary technologies as a means of expression.
The museum presents works by international artists, produces new works and projects, supports research and experimentation, and creates opportunities for exchange between artists, audiences, professionals and new generations.
Exhibitions, installations, immersive and audiovisual performances, professional training and educational programmes coexist within the same space, overcoming the traditional boundaries between museum, production venue and performance space.
Vision
Media Art is, by its very nature, constantly evolving.
MAM sees the museum not as a static container, but as an organism capable of evolving alongside artists, technologies and contemporary forms of expression.
MAM is a space for contemporary culture, where emerging artistic practices can be presented, produced and explored as they develop. It is a place open to experimentation, interdisciplinary exchange and audience participation, where artists from different generations and backgrounds meet and new relationships between art, technology, sound, image and space can emerge.
At MAM, the history of digital culture is not simply preserved: it remains present and alive. Works, practices, technologies and experiences from the past are reactivated and placed in dialogue with contemporary artistic research, creating continuity between different generations of artists and different moments of technological and cultural transformation.
MAM looks to the future from this living heritage, remaining open to the languages, technologies and artistic practices that are still taking shape.
History
MAM opens on 9 October 2026, but its history begins in 1999 with FLxER and Shockart.net, two projects that emerge from Rome’s early digital culture.
Shockart.net becomes one of Italy’s first platforms dedicated to Web Art and an international reference point for digital creativity, while FLxER develops as a project dedicated to audiovisual experimentation and the creation of tools for real-time performance.
In 2004, LPM – Live Performers Meeting is launched as an international gathering dedicated to audiovisual performing arts, bringing together artists, developers, researchers and organisations while progressively giving rise to an international network.
In 2011, this network leads to the creation of AVnode, connecting organisations active in audiovisual and digital arts across Europe and around the world.
Over the years, new projects dedicated to performance, experimentation, training and education emerge, including Live Cinema Festival, Fotonica, ElectroKids, Visual Sound Festival and Visual Sound Academy.
For more than twenty-five years, this ecosystem has been active across festivals, exhibitions, performances, workshops, research and training, bringing international artists to Rome and projects born in Rome to cities around the world.
MAM gives this experience a permanent home, keeping its history alive while creating a space in which new artistic practices, technologies and generations can continue to meet.
Spaces
MAM extends across approximately 1,000 square metres at Corso d’Italia 37/D, in the heart of Rome, combining exhibition areas, an immersive room, spaces for education and training, and areas dedicated to production and live activities.
Immersive Room
The 300-square-metre immersive room is the heart of MAM.
Equipped with 28 projectors and an eight-channel sound system, the room creates a continuous audiovisual environment across its walls and floor for immersive artworks.
What makes the room unique is its integrated stage, which allows the same immersive environment to host live performances, live cinema, audiovisual concerts, talks and presentations, creating a direct relationship between image, sound, space, audience and the physical presence of the artist.
Exhibition Spaces
From October to May, MAM’s exhibition spaces host a seasonal exhibition dedicated to historical and contemporary practices in Media Art, bringing together immersive works, installations, Net Art, AI Art and other forms of digital art.
MAM opens in 2026 with HyperMedia, an exhibition that establishes this dialogue between different generations, technologies and practices, connecting the early experiences of digital culture with contemporary artistic research.
Alongside the exhibition programme, MAM hosts festivals and selected events dedicated to digital, audiovisual and immersive live arts, including LPM – Live Performers Meeting, Live Cinema Festival, Fotonica, ElectroKids and Visual Sound Festival, as well as projects presented by national and international cultural organisations.
The same spaces can therefore move between exhibition, experimentation and live performance, allowing different forms of Media Art to coexist within the architecture of MAM.
Education & Academy
The spaces dedicated to education and training host activities for schools, children and families, as well as the professional programmes of the Visual Sound Academy.
Workshops, talks and residencies complement the experience of the artworks, introducing participants to the tools, languages and creative processes through which they are produced.
